Short description of the participating partner organization
The role of U2T in the project is to develop the packaging of the devices in order to commercially exploit the transmitters and receivers in the future 100 GbE and 110 GHz test & measurement market.
U2T is a Germany based SME with approx. 30 employees and its market orientation is clearly focused to address the ultra high-speed photonic components for optical communication systems. u²t Photonics AG (Berlin, Germany) was founded in January 1998 as a spin-off company of the HHI. In autumn 2001 u²t announced the acquisition of LKF Advanced Optics GmbH. Our core competence is the development of ultrafast optoelectronic components for fiber-optic applications such as communication superhighways and microwave photonic systems, which require operation frequencies of 40 GHz and beyond. u²t has expert knowledge starting from device design and chip manufacturing to systems configurations and testing.
Often based on the results of National or EU projects, leading edge optoelectronic components have been developed and introduced to the market. Examples are the high-speed waveguide integrated photodetectors with 50GHz bandwidth for test and measurement applications, photoreceivers for applications in 40 Gbit/s communication systems and a mode-locked laser source delivering 1.5 ps short pulses for OTDM experiments at bit rates up to 160 Gbit/s. As an SME partner in the project, U2T will use the accumulated excellence in the field of high-speed device design to package the ultrafast transmitter and receiver components to be developed in the project. We will closely interact with the system partners in the project to ensure that the solutions are matched with the requirements of future products. In cooperation with the other technology partners will reinforce our manufacturing base. The strong market position of U2T in the 40 Gbit/s system and 50 GHz test & measurement market will contribute to an efficient exploitation of the project results.

Short description of the participants (in alphabetical order)
Jörg Honecker has been working for u²t Photonics as Development Engineer since September 2000. He is in charge of rf-simulation and rf-testing of our devices.
Dr. Andreas Steffan joined u²t Photonics AG in 2002. His work as Project Manager in the R&D department includes chip design and all aspects of optical and rf-packaging.
Andreas Umbach today serves as Co-Founder and CEO of u²t Photonics AG. He is a reknowned expert in Indium-Phosphide technology and high-speed waveguide-integrated photodiodes.
Günter Unterbörsch is Co-Founder and COO of u²t Photonics AG. He has more than 20 years experience in the field of mm-wave applications, device physics, and rf-measurement techniques.
