CENTRE NATIONAL DE LA RECHERCHE SCIENTIFIQUE (IEMN)

Short description of the participating partner organization

CNRS-IEMN partner will be mainly involved in WP3 concerning the fabrication of vertical gratings and spot size converters for mm wave-photonic generators as well as in WP7 for what regards training activities.

The "Institut d'Electronique, de Micro-électronique et de Nanotechnologie" (IEMN, JRU 8520) was created in 1992. IEMN is a Joint Research Unit between Centre National de la recherche Scientifique (CNRS), Université des Sciences et Technologies de Lille (USTL), Université de Valenciennes et du Hainaut Cambrésis (UVHC) and Institut Supérieur d’Electronique et de Naotechnologie (ISEN).

Researchers and technical staff from CNRS and USTL will be involved in the present project. About 350 people (140 permanent CNRS researchers and about 60 engineers, technicians and administrative staff) are working in the 4 different laboratories of the Institute, mainly located in Villeneuve d'Ascq. The main part of the technical staff is working in several facilities, mainly in microelectronic, optoelectronic and microsystems fabrication (1400m² of clean rooms) in which are available all the equipment for fabricating state of the art devices, components and microsystems, with active dimensions down to the nanometre scale.

In optoelectronics, main current research themes deal with interactions between microwaves and photonics, and more specifically with related devices and systems. Modelling tools as well as technological fabrication know-how are jointly developed to fabricate new functionality in terms of device properties. Current device investigations are, for example, on grating (planar and vertical) encryption for integrated filters on semiconductor (apodised filters using sampled gratings have shown 20 dB improvement in side lobe rejection ratio compared to linear gratings) or specific laser diodes, switching matrices in integrated optics (more than 30 dB of optical crosstalk has been obtained for a optical switch on InP with less than 60 mA driving current) as well as nanophotonics devices. Main application activity is within the radio over multimode fibre systems.

Short description of the participants (in alphabetical order)

Jean-Pierre VILCOT is a Researcher from the "Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique" in the Communication and Information Science and Technology Department. His activities include optoelectronic and photonic component fabrication and characterization with III-V materials, with the main fields of applications being optical telecommunication devices and radio over fibre systems and components. He is currently involved in 2 INTERREG III European projects (FR-UK "ROSETTE" and FR-BE "PREMIO") concerning optoelectronic and photonic device fabrication and characterization. He has been part of NEFERTITI FP5 NoE and will be part of ISIS FP6 NoE which is currently under negotiation, both dealing with microwave photonics. He is also part of the MONOPLA FP5 IST project related to high speed pulse lasers.
